Piezo sensors to improve diesel engine efficiency
24 March 2004
News
Siemens VDO and US automotive supplier, Federal Mogul, have developed a sensor they say will improve the efficiency of future diesel engines while making them smoother-running and reducing their emissions.
The sensor is located directly on the glow plug of a diesel engine - the ideal spot to measure the combustion process more directly and precisely. Up to now, the gauges have been installed outside the engine block because the stress inside the cylinder head is so high.
Extreme heat, pressure levels of 28 bars, and especially the strong vibrations make it nearly impossible for electronic components to survive. The new sensor, however, is made of an extremely stress-resistant ceramic and works according to the piezoelectric principle. Under pressure, it gives off electrical signals, which the control electronics use to monitor the pressure levels in the cylinder.
Highly sensitive sensors are indispensable for today's diesel and petrol engines. They supply important data about engine combustion processes to the piezo-controlled injection systems that are increasingly being installed. Using multiple injections within fractions of a second, these systems can deliver the precise amount of fuel at exactly the right instant, achieving optimal performance.
The partners plan to begin production of the sensor series in 2006.
