Benchtop capabilities combined with portability

5 May 2004 Test & Measurement News

Spescom MeasureGraph's new Fluke Scopemeter 190C Series offers radio professionals a high-end oscilloscope in a portable package. These instruments differ from other portable oscilloscopes in that they have a large colour LCD for the display and a very fast display update rate, says Fluke.

The instrument incorporates a full range of measurement features, includes automatic and cursor measurements, a wide range of trigger functions including video triggering, waveform processing and logging of readings over time. It has a single-shot bandwidth of 200 MHz (100 MHz on the 196C) and a realtime sampling rate as high as 2,5 GSa/s (1 GSa/s on the 196C). The instrument runs for up to four hours on a single battery charge.

The fast update rate, assisted by a Digital Persistence function, allows for signal display and waveform decay typical of analog oscilloscopes. The benefit is apparent when working with modulated and dynamic signals - this is a portable oscilloscope that shows complex and modulated signals exactly as they would be seen using a scope, says Fluke.

Cursors are provided to make measurements under manual control, for modulation depth when working with AM signals for instance, or one can make fully automatic measurements of the standard parameters such as frequency, ride- and fall-time, power, phase, or amplitudes in V or in dBm or dBv. There is also an automatic amplitude measurement specifically for use with pulse-width modulated signals that reads the effective output voltage after low-pass filtering of the signal. This is difficult (if not impossible) with most other test tools available, says Fluke, yet a necessity when working with PWM-AM systems.
