Dual high efficiency white LED drivers

A dual, full function, step-up DC/DC converter specifically designed to drive up to 20 white LEDs from a Li-Ion battery has been released by Linear Technology. It has a high efficiency, current mode and fixed frequency operation (settable from 200 kHz to 2 MHz via single resistor) to ensure uniform LED brightness and maximum battery life. Acting as a constant current source, the same current is delivered to each white LED. Two independent converters drive asymmetric LED strings - up to 10 in series per converter - from an input voltage of 2,7 V to 24 V, delivering efficiencies up to 81%, says Linear. The device's 3 x 3 mm DFN package (0,75 mm thick) with tiny external parts, provides a very compact footprint for space-constrained handheld applications.
