Hot-swap controller with current limiting and soft start

Analog Devices' ADM1073 is a -48 V hot swap controller designed for central office applications. The device uses a number of techniques to protect the external N-channel FET and the supply against inrush currents during board insertion and short circuits in the event of board failure.

Soft start, with adjustable current limit profile, controls the current during FET turn-on, and a programmable current limit determines the maximum current. An adjustable PWM retry scheme limits the FET on-time in the event that the output voltage does not reach the required value in a single on cycle, and the device will shut down the FET after seven consecutive retries. Further safe operating area (SOA) protection is provided by reducing the FET on-time as the voltage drop across the FET increases.

Key features are: precision linear inrush current limiting soft start inrush current limit profiling; precision current limit ON time protects FET; adjustable current limit threshold; adjustable PWM retry scheme and multiple device cascading for charging large capacitive loads; outputs indicate whether load capacitor fully charged and whether supply in or out of limit; shutdown after seven consecutive auto-restarts for FET protection; restart input for user-triggered 5 second shutdown and auto-restart; shunt regulator for operation over wide supply range; supply undervoltage and overvoltage monitoring with adjustable hysteresis is user-programmable.

A 'micro' evaluation board is available.
