Ohmite Manufacturing Company provides a new Energy Rating Calculator for resistors on its website www.ohmite.com. In pulse applications, the overriding concern is often the joule rating of a resistor, not its continuous power rating (wattage). The company says that Joule ratings for its wirewound products have been merged with those of its ceramic composition resistors to show the user the full range of choices.
The Energy Rating Calculator will select resistors within 10% of the ohm value specified and will meet or exceed the specified joule rating. Users can quickly jump to the datasheet for the recommended product, and check inventory on the exact part they need.
Not all Ohmite products carry a joule rating that has been empirically proven and published. This is especially true of thick film resistors, which as a general rule have very low energy ratings, due to the small mass of the resistive element. As Ohmite develops joule ratings for new and existing products it is incorporating them into the Calculator.
