STMicroelectronics is introducing two new ARM core-based product families. The STR710 series is based on the ARM7TDMI core and includes embedded flash and low pin-count packages. The STR720 series is based on the ARM720T core with cache, MMU, and an SDRAM interface.
The '710 family is aimed at customers who want the power and flexibility of a 32-bit microcontroller plus a rich set of on-chip peripherals, while the '720 is intended for applications requiring performance and an open-system memory architecture that easily supports advanced operating systems.
Both families target industrial control applications such as factory automation, point-of-sale and vending machines, and testing equipment, as well as mass-market telecom applications such as bridges and protocol translators.
ARM core-based products offer several key advantages, says ST. These include: state-of-the-art embedded flash memory with performance up to 48 MHz and low latency for deterministic behaviour in realtime applications; -40 to +85°C industrial temperature range; high connectivity using serial interfaces including CAN, USB, SPI, I2C, and UART.
In terms of tools and support, ST's partnership with ARM enables it to provide a low-cost RealView Developer Kit product specifically for the STR7xx series, based on the ARM RealView Developer Suite software and hardware solution. The STR7xx series is also supported by efficient tools and development support environments from a range of third parties.
