15 W surface-mountable DC-DC converters

25 October 2000 Power Electronics / Power Management

Artesyn Technologies has launched a new series of 15 W surface-mountable isolated DC-DC converters. Known as the SXA15 series, the converters are designed specifically for high-volume manufacturing lines using standard pick-and-place equipment. The converters feature very accurate output regulation and rapid dynamic response, making them ideal for applications involving fast transient power demands. Typically, these include telecommunications, networking, mobile, industrial and other distributed power applications.

Housed in a rugged open-frame package with an industry-standard 50 x 25 mm footprint, SXA15 series converters weigh 14 g, claimed to be significantly lighter than comparable encapsulated models. There are initially three models in the series, offering output voltages of 12, 5 and 3,3 V, each with a 24 V (18-36 V) input range. All three models offer an output voltage trim facility for design integration: the 12 and 5 V converters can be adjusted between 90 and 110% of nominal output and the 3,3 V converter has an even wider output range of 68 to 110% of nominal, enabling users to trim down to 2,25 V for compatibility with the low-voltage silicon of next-generation communications and network servers.

All SXA15 series converters offer remote on/off facilities and are comprehensively protected against short-circuit conditions. They can be connected in series or parallel and the converters' open-frame construction simplifies thermal management and allows operation in a wide ambient temperature range of -40 to +70°C with natural cooling.
