Omnirel, an International Rectifier company, has introduced four high-efficiency, low-voltage switching regulators in plastic packages that it claims economically increases power density for select commercial, industrial and military applications. The OM9551SP, OM9552SP, OM9553SP and OM9554SP switching regulators are 5 V input, 3 A output units for 3,3, 2,5, 1,8 and 1,5 V output applications respectively. The units are similar to standard three-pin, nonisolated switching regulators.
Omnirel's chip-on-board assembly technology allows the new regulators to be squeezed into a 1,91 x 2,03 x 1,27 cm footprint, yet provide 4,9 W/cm3 power density. Each OM955 Series module incorporates an International Rectifier IRF7314 HEXFET MOSFET and a 15WQ040 Schottky diode. A 22 µF input capacitor and 330 µF output capacitor are built into the regulator module.
The units operate over a -25 to +85°C temperature range and feature a typical efficiency of 87%. Switching regulators are used in commercial, scientific and military satellite power systems where point-of-load regulation is required. This includes DSPs, microcontrollers and microprocessors, and low-voltage logic circuits, including FPGA systems.
Maximum ratings at 25°C are: voltage, 8 V; output current, 4 A; short circuit power dissipation, 1,8 W; short circuit output power, 10 W.
