Rohm has introduced a Java-compliant melody sound source IC that combines advanced polyphonic sound output with full Java compliance. The BU8899GU is a stereo melody source IC offering 64 polyphonic tones, 47 drum set sounds, 15 electric drum set sounds and 32 effects sounds. Up to eight user-customised sounds can also be created. A high sampling rate of 44,1 kHz ensures high quality sound output, says Rohm, while the combination of features provides a single-chip solution for ring tones, voice, music, gaming and all other sound output. It allows simultaneous output of up to four different tunes and supports realtime modification of tempo, key and volume. In addition, built-in 3-channel LED and vibration control functionality simplifies synchronisation of these functions with songs, ring tones, and other audio outputs. The IC can be controlled via a serial or parallel interface, with ADPCM and integrated FIFO functions minimising the load on the host CPU.
