Specially-developed alloy for automotive components

28 July 2004 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

Multi-Alloys is one of South Africa's leading suppliers of stainless steel as well as special alloys, including Brush Alloy 171, a material specially-developed to meet the stringent requirements of automotive manufacturing and assembly processes.

This is a high performance material used extensively in automotive wire harness terminals, switches, and relays. It has a carefully balanced chemical composition of copper, beryllium, nickel, tin, and zirconium combined with the controlled rolling and heat treatment in manufacture, which allows Alloy 171 to withstand temperatures of between 125 and 175°C.

Temperatures in this range can easily be reached under the bonnets of modern cars. Alloy 171 complies with component qualification tests, ie, US specification AEC-Q200 for extreme testing of passive electronic components including 1000 hours of high temperature storage at +125°C, 1000 temperature cycles from -40 to + 125°C, 1000 hours of storage in humid heat (85% relative humidity) and 1000 hour operational life test, 130°C at maximum specified power.

Benefits of Alloy 171 are: high electrical and thermal conductivity - reduces temperature rise for longer operating life; strength combined with modulus of elasticity - meets miniaturisation demands; high temperature applications - maintains high spring force at high temperature eliminating the need to over-design contact normal forces to compensate for stress loss over time; manufacturability - can be easily formed in to complex shapes without sacrificing high strength levels.

Multi-Alloys distribute Alloy 171 and other beryllium copper wire and strip products on behalf of Brush Wellman and also represent Haynes International, producers of Hastelloy alloys in South Africa meeting the local industry's specialist metal requirements.
