Combined fingerprint sensor and smartcard reader

8 September 2004 Electronics Technology Interconnection

STMicroelectronics' TouchChip Smartcard reader TCRS1A combines the company's successful TouchChip silicon fingerprint sensor with a smartcard reader to achieve ultra-secure authentication. The multifactor authentication approach of the reader - verifying 'something you have' as well as 'something you are' - provides a secure and convenient solution for authenticating the true identity of a person.

Higher levels of security are possible with the TCRS1A since the fingerprint templates are stored inside a smartcard instead of the PC. This not only provides a more secure environment but it also enhances portability and eliminates privacy concerns.

The fingerprint sensor device is based on ST's Active Capacitive-Sensing Technology. Shown to create better quality images than other silicon solutions, according to ST, this is a state-of-the-art technology that enables TouchChip customers to integrate very high levels of security into their own application. With the company's PerfectPrint image optimisation and PerfectMatch fingerprint matching, it says customers can be sure of achieving the highest performance possible, for all skin types under all operating conditions.
