Following recent news of 'exploding' mobile phones, due to the use of counterfeit batteries, Microchip has announced that its Keeloq secure algorithm can be readily used for battery authentication in portable applications. The technology allows an application simply and securely to differentiate between genuine and counterfeit batteries. Counterfeit batteries may violate both mechanical and electrical safety and security requirements making for a potentially dangerous situation. By integrating Microchip's PIC microcontrollers into the host system, and one of its PowerSmart battery fuel gauge devices into the battery pack, one of the industry's most secure authentication solutions can be made without adding excessive complexity to the system, says the company.
