Texas Instruments has introduced a new family in its MSP430 ultra-low power 16-bit RISC microcontroller line. The MSP430F2xx provides twice the processing performance and half the standby power consumption compared to earlier devices, claims TI, and incorporates enhancements that reduce overall system cost and improve reliability. The MSP430F2xx family features a realtime clock standby mode of less than 1 μA with the ability to switch in under 1 μs to a fully synchronised 16 MIPS active mode. Additional enhancements of MSP430F2xx include an integrated ±2,5% on-chip oscillator, pull-up/pull-down resistors, and increased number of analog inputs. In-system programmable Flash has been improved with smaller 64-byte segments, allowing fast programming times, and a lower 2,2 V programming voltage. Unlike other MCUs, TI says all fail-safe features of the series are available during all modes with no power penalty. The MSP430F2xx is specified for 1,8 V to 3,6 V operation.
