ESD protection diodes for portable and battery powered applications

17 November 2004 Circuit & System Protection

Royal Philips Electronics has introduced a series of single-line, bi-directional electro-static discharge (ESD) protection diodes designed to protect devices such as MP3 players and mobile phones from damage caused by ESD and other voltage-induced transient pulses. The PESD5V0S1Bx series - which includes the PESD5V0S1BL, said to be the smallest protection diode in the industry - features good ESD clamping performance in ultra compact packages, using minimal board space.

Semiconductors are becoming smaller, denser and more complex, particularly in space-critical applications, thus increasing the total system's susceptibility to ESD pulses. With ultra compact packaging and a low leakage current down to 5 nA, Philips says its new series of ESD protection diodes are ideal for applications where board space and power consumption are critical. Featuring a low device capacitance of only 35 pF, the ESD protection diodes are also suited for high frequency applications where too much protection device parasitic capacitance causes unintentional signal distortion and malfunction of the end application.

These bi-directional ESD protection diodes are designed to withstand ESD pulses up to 30 kV and fulfil industry standard IEC 61000-4-2 (level 4). The parts include the PESD5V0S1BL, available in the SOD882 surface mount package with a footprint of 1 x 0,6 x 0,5 mm. The other two parts in the series include the PESD5V0S1BA available in the SOD323 and the PESD5V0S1BB available in the SOD523.
