Complete very fast infrared 10 Mbps system for wireless communication

8 November 2000 Opto-Electronics

Broadening its offerings in the infrared data transmission market, Infineon Technologies announced the Very Fast Infrared (VFIR) 16 Mbps system at World PC Expo. The VFIR system enables notebook, mobile phone, printer and PDA manufacturers to develop products featuring high-speed data transfer necessary to keep pace with the increasing size of data files containing video, digital images, and graphics.

Using Infineon's VFIR Development Kit, manufacturers can immediately begin development. A PCMCIA controller module, transceiver dongle, test program, and driver are included in the development kit. Infineon's VFIR system is compliant with the Infrared Data Associations 1.3 standard. In addition to 16 Mbps, legacy support ensures that the controller and transceiver provide data transmission rates of 4 Mbps, 1,15 Mbps, 115 kbps, 9,6 kbps and ASK. Because many IRDA-enabled products use embedded processing, Infineon's VFIR system is portable as a VHDL macro.

The VFIR controller operates using the same drivers for all transmission speeds, simplifying upgrades to 16 Mbps. The VFIR transceiver is pin-compatible with Infineon and as well as other leading suppliers' IrDT (Infrared Data Transceiver) products. Users will be able to transmit at four times the transmission speed with no change in power consumption. To further conserve power for hand-held devices, the transceiver has a standby current of 3,0 mA, and shutdown current of less than 50 nA.
