High performance handheld optical tester

Tektronix has introduced a comprehensive line of handheld or 'mini' optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) and optical power meter modules, and the NetTek Analyser, the control and display platform that houses the new modules.

The nine new OTDR modules will enable fibre-optic network providers and Inter-Exchange Carriers (IXCs) to inventory and maintain far fewer instrument types to accomplish many different measurement tasks, claims Tektronix. The OTDR family is the company's next-generation entry into long haul (300 km and up) fibre installations, and also addresses short and mid-range fibre-optic networks. The modules set performance benchmarks in their class, continuing the long tradition of Tektronix leadership in OTDR technology.

"As a result of customer demand, Tektronix is committed to providing innovative solutions that help drive our customers through the evolving information infrastructure,'' said Scott Bausback, Vice President, Communications Business Unit, Tektronix. "Communications network operators and IXCs are racing to keep up with capacity demands, and that means an increase in field work to install new infrastructures and maintain existing networks. Our new handheld platform puts all of the key performance and conformance testing tools in one package and ushers in the next generation of both OTDRs and installation and maintenance tools.''

The modular Tektronix NetTek platform simultaneously accepts up to four OTDR modules plus an optical power meter. The OTDR modules address virtually every prevailing mode, wavelength and fibre-optic network, and both in-band and out-of-band measurements, claims the company. The NetTek platform is designed to accommodate an expanding line of measurement modules currently in development.
