SPI bus programmable gain amplifier

26 January 2005 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI Motion Control & Drives

Microchip has introduced an eight gain-step, SPI bus programmable gain amplifier family that provides digital control over the amplifier function and design. The ability to configure the system gain and signal path during operation allows maximum flexibility for system self-calibration and other system operation adjustments. The MCP6S9X devices are programmed over the SPI bus, giving control of gain and input channel. This can provide analog input expansion for a microcontroller or DSP. This reduces the cost of the microcontroller by requiring a lower number of I/O pins. In addition, having multiple channels for the same signal path enables system self-calibration, enhancing accuracy over time and temperature. Target applications include industrial and instrumentation markets as well as signal and sensor processing.
