Micro includes on-board LCD driver

9 March 2005 Opto-Electronics

Toshiba has expanded its family of high performance CMOS 8-bit microcontrollers with a device that integrates 32 KB of flash memory, an LCD driver circuit, and key peripherals and interfaces into a compact 100-pin package.

The TMP86FM25 flash memory microcontroller will suit applications ranging from home appliances to EPOS systems and industrial control equipment. Onboard flash allows designers to use the same device to offer different levels of functionality simply by changing program software, while the integrated peripherals minimise the need for external components.

In addition to the 60seg x 16com LCD driver and booster circuit and the onboard flash memory, the P-QFP100-packaged TMP86FM25 integrates 2 KB of boot ROM, 2 KB of RAM and an 8-bit, 8-channel ADC. A single-channel 18-bit timer, a four-channel 8-bit timer, and a watchdog timer are also available. Serial interfaces take the form of a 2-channel, 8-bit SIO and a single-channel UART, while 42 pins are available for general I/O.

Based on the company's TLCS-870/C CPU core with 731 basic operations, operation is possible up to 16 MHz with voltages of between 2,7 V and 3,6 V. At 8 MHz, it can be used with voltages down to 1,8 V. A starter kit is available that includes a flash memory programmer and extensive software libraries.
