SCRs rated for 75 A in compact epoxy package

International Rectifier's 75 A-rated 70TPS12 and 70TPS16 silicon controlled rectifiers (SCRs) are now available in the Super-247 package. The SCR is used in a multitude of applications, ranging from motor drive input bridges to line frequency welding machines. These SCRs expand the IR portfolio of discrete plastic SCRs and now cover from 10 A to 75 A, with voltages up to 1600 V.
Both 1200 V and 1600 V devices have superior thermal performance, says IR. For example, the junction-to-case thermal resistance of the 70TPS12 and the 70TPS16 is very low, with about 12% better thermal resistance than industry standard, increasing the reliability.
IR's Super-247 package has lower thermal resistance (0,27°C/W), and has the same power handling capability as the larger JEDEC TO-264 package. However, the Super-247 has the same footprint as the common TO-247. Other benefits include 1400 V surge capability, which is useful for safe operation in case a fault condition exists, like a short circuit, and a maximum on-state voltage of 1,4 V at 100 A, for low power dissipation.
