High voltage impedance matching

23 March 2005 Passive Components

Impedance matching in power amplifiers for base stations can now be done with a simple ceramic trimming capacitor from Murata.

Rated for operation at 250 V d.c. with dielectric withstand voltage of 550 V d.c., the trimmer is designed specifically for this task. This design avoids the use of fixed capacitors, is more efficient than printing and trimming and costs less than sapphire or glass trimmers, says the manufacturer.

The TZW4 series has high Q from VHF to microwave frequencies with a minimum of 200 at 500 MHz. The temperature coefficient is NPO ±300 ppm/°C and the operating temperature range is -55 to +125°C. Insulation resistance is over 104 Ω. Mechanically, the footprint is nominally 5,2 by 4,2 mm with a profile height of only 2,5 mm. The top adjustment rotor also forms the middle electrode, providing enhanced reliability and compact design. Setting torque is 2,0 to 10,0 mNm.
