Inductive displacement transducer for rapid movement

For sensing very rapid motion, Balluff's new BIW analog inductive transducer has a sampling rate of 20 kHz and a resolution and repeat accuracy in the micrometer range. According to the company, this system sets new standards in non-contact displacement sensing.
The BIW inductive displacement transducer is based on a new, patented principle which detects the position without contact. This is achieved by means of a sender/receiver sensing element and a resonant circuit protected inside an extruded aluminium housing. The resonant circuit is attached to a control rod which is in turn linked to the moving member of the machine whose position needs to be sensed.
The resonant circuit is briefly energised by the sender component of the sensor element at a sampling rate of 20 kHz and couples a signal representing the current position into the receiver component. The position is immediately available on the output as an absolute analog signal. The absolute output signal is available with rising or falling slope.
The BIW transducer is characterised by high resolution and repeat accuracy. It is insensitive to shock, vibration and magnetic fields.
Applications include metal and plastic forming and bending machines. User-configurable cable plugs, fastening elements and display devices are included in the wide range of accessories for the BIL transducer.
