Conference & Expo celebrates 25 years of technology transfer in making quality measurements

1 June 2005 News

The Test & Measurement 2005 Conference and Exhibition, coming up on 5-7 September, is the 25th year that calibration and testing laboratory personnel will get together to learn, be updated and participate in the transfer of technology in their various fields of interest. The organisers, well aware of the growing importance that the results of these tests and calibrations are having on the many aspects of trade, manufacturing and consumer affairs, will once again provide a focused programme for both analytical and physical measurement disciplines.

Steve Sidney, chair of the Organising Committee and manager of the NLA, has pointed out that whilst there have been many scientific advances in areas such as computing, communications and control systems, it is often surprising that fundamental measurements are often overlooked. He is encouraging all those who wish to gain a better understanding of these issues to attend this event. There is always a strong educational flavour to the various papers that are presented, thus catering for the needs of both experienced practitioners as well as new entrants to the field.

There has been a substantial number of papers submitted and it is expected that the 3-day conference will have around 60-70 sessions. Given the wide diversity of fields that attendees come from, the organisers are confident that there is something for everyone, ranging from accreditation to quality assurance, traceability to measurement uncertainty, reference materials and proficiency testing to laboratory management. The event has attracted a wide range of international contributions as well as from Africa, the SADC and, of course, South Africa.

A substantial number of leading suppliers will be at the exhibition that runs alongside the conference. For the first time, the exhibition will be open to all members of the laboratory community who are only in a position to attend the exhibition but not the conference.

Test & Measurement Conference will take place at Emperors Palace Convention Centre, Johannesburg International Airport. The open days for the exhibition are 6 and 7 September 2005.

Attendees can register on the day, or pre-register at www.nla.org.za
