Fluke specialist demonstrates new products

1 June 2005 News

Comtest played host to a product specialist from Fluke during April. Jason Titmas, Fluke's general purpose test specialist, belongs to Fluke's Field Product Management Team, which comprises seven product specialists, each of whom focuses on a different area.

His area of specialisation includes benchtop arbitrary waveform generators, VXI generators, frequency counters and timer/counters, and frequency references.

During his weeklong visit to South Africa, Titmas demonstrated Fluke's latest product, the 397 Universal Waveform Generator, and the Fluke 910R GPS-disciplined Frequency Standard to Comtest customers countrywide. Comtest's precision measurement sales manager, Hilton Preston, welcomed Titmas' visit: "Jason is here to impart his knowledge and expertise to us, our dealers and customers. We are using this road trip to introduce him to our current market, which will, in turn, open up more market opportunities for the Fluke range in South Africa."

According to Titmas, the dual-channel Fluke 397 breaks new ground in universal waveform generator design: "With its unprecedented combination of universal generator and synthesizer, high resolution, deep memory and wide frequency range, the 397 offers a versatile range of benefits that will facilitate work in many fields."

Preston concurs, adding that this product opens up new markets in communication, video and television, telecommunication, radar, ultrasonics and factory testing.

Titmas also gave presentations on the Fluke 910R GPS-controlled frequency standard, which delivers a precision frequency reference that, with its many connectivity options, can be installed, monitored and managed from virtually any location. The 910R is an inherently traceable and extremely accurate frequency standard and is suited for use as a frequency standard in many applications, including telecoms, calibration and automatic test systems. Preston says there has long been a need in the market for a good reference standard for frequency, and adds that the 910R will certainly make the maintenance technician's life easier.

During his visit, Titmas visited customers from a wide range of industries, including the NLA metrology lab, defence, cellular network providers, cellular provider repair centres, calibration houses, Telkom, Eskom, Transtel, Sentech, electric prepaid power meter suppliers, switch manufacturers, telecom equipment suppliers and universities.

Comments Titmas: "The interest in our products countrywide was generally excellent. We demonstrated how our equipment could be used in customer specific applications and industries, which made it all the more valuable to them. My aim is to make our distributor, Comtest, as useful as possible to the customer, by increasing the product knowledge of both the distributor and the dealer."
