Soldering and desoldering tips are shaped pieces of iron-plated copper that are used to transfer heat from the heating element of a soldering iron, to the surface being soldered. Plato, one of the largest providers of solder tips in the world, manufactures solder tips to fit all of the most popular solder stations.
In the past, the working end of many soldering tips was dipped in lead (Pb) solder to protect from corrosion. All Plato tips manufactured after December 2003 are dipped in lead-free solder.
The higher heat and more active fluxes often used in lead-free soldering will destroy solder tips more quickly than tin-lead solder techniques. Plato has thus designed its soldering tips to last longer and transfer heat more rapidly.
