Speedline Technologies awarded 2005 SMT Company of The Year

27 July 2005 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

Speedline Technologies is the recipient of Frost & Sullivan's 2005 Surface Mount Technology Company of The Year Award.

Speedline Technologies is a manufacturer of surface mount technology (SMT) capital equipment and one of the market leaders in the reflow and screen-printer equipment markets. Speedline sells its screen printers under MPM and soldering equipment under Electrovert. The company also offers cleaning equipment from Accel, dispensing equipment from Camalot and provides software to enhance the manufacturing process.

Since the company was spun out from Cookson Electronics it has made tremendous strides. For starters, Speedline repositioned itself in the market and the company is focusing on its process expertise. This is very critical since several original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and contract electronic manufacturers (CEMs) lost some of their manufacturing process knowledge during the economic downturn. The company has also been able to add financial and human resources to beef up its process knowledge operations.

One key area where Speedline Technologies excels in process knowledge is lead-free manufacturing. Since the company is a screen printer and soldering equipment manufacturer it is able to provide increased value to its customers since these two equipment are critical in the lead free manufacturing process. This is important to end-users who are looking for SMT capital equipment. The company also works closely with its customers' R&D teams to help them refine the lead free manufacturing process. This has been critical to the company's success in 2004. The company also has soldering equipment that can withstand higher temperatures, which is required for lead-free manufacturing. It has also pursued the wave soldering equipment more because end-users are upgrading their wave equipment for lead-free and the wave market is experiencing a resurgence.

The company's performance has changed dramatically over the past two years. It has made a big turnaround, which helped it earn this award for 2005. While several companies fell off the SMT map over the past two years, Speedline Technologies was able to remain afloat during tough economic times. To date the company is in a healthy state and is poised for further growth.

Frost & Sullivan is proud to recognise Speedline Technologies as the 2005 Company of The Year in the SMT industry.
