The Agilent 34980A multifunction switch unit was voted testers choice for 2005 in design news. The Agilent 34980A is said to offer the broadest range of core switch/measure functionality as an alternative to VXI and PXI at a claimed price up to 40% less than comparable switch and measurement platforms. Agilent says that engineers building design verification and test systems in the electronics, automotive, aerospace/defence, medical and computer industries now have the flexibility to create accurate test systems suited to their needs and budget.
Simplified set-up for a number of different functions is a key benefit of the unit. It has 19 plug-in modules that offer a broad range of functionality with low frequency, RF, and microwave switching to 20 GHz, digital I/O and digital-to-analog converters, and counter/totaliser capabilities. The unit can house up to 560 two-wire multiplexer channels or 1024 two-wire matrix crosspoints in one mainframe.
Connection to PCs and other gear is made with USB, LAN, or GPIB links. With the Ethernet connection the instrument can be remotely accessed and controlled. Set-up is further simplified by reduced wiring. As it has an integrated digital multimeter, signals can be routed directly to the DMM, eliminating complex wiring.
Standard connectors on the modules also allow one to use standard, off-the-shelf 50 and 70-pin shielded cables to easily connect test signals from the instrument to the unit under test or other test points. Additional wiring options include detachable terminal blocks for discrete wiring needs and mass interconnect solutions.
