Balluff has enhanced its product range of displacement sensors with the new BML. This highly precise incremental displacement measuring system consists of a sensor head and a magnetically encoded tape-marker. The sensor head slides over the tape, which is magnetised with alternating polarity. The periodic change is presented on the sensor output as a standard square wave or sine/cosine signal. The signals are counted and processed using the standard incremental or sinusoidal inputs on the processor.
The traverse speed can be up to 10 m/s, while the measured position value (with resolution extending down to 1 μm, and accuracy classes from 10 to 20 μm) is available in fractions of microseconds. The controller thus receives the position signal in realtime. In spite of the high accuracy and realtime capability, gaps of over 2 mm are allowable between the sensor head and the tape are permitted.
Since the measuring system operates by magnetism, it is highly insensitive to contamination such as oil or dust - in contrast, especially to optical systems, making them ideal for use in harsh, dusty industrial environments.
