Stereo optical inspection systems are easy on the operators

24 August 2005 Test & Measurement Products & Solutions

Vision Engineering was founded in 1958 by Rob Freeman, a toolmaker who had previously worked as a race mechanic. He started off as a specialist optical sub-contractor to large British automotive companies, and subsequently developed a range of endoscopes, borescopes and microscopes in response to the manufacturing requirements of the defence, aerospace and automotive industries. In the 1970s, the company began to experiment with aerial projection systems, which would free microscope operators from restrictive cumbersome eyepieces.

Today, Vision Engineering manufactures a range of microscope products that include: stereo magnifiers; stereo microscopes; ISIS eye pieces; and non-contact measurement devices.

The Mantis family is a unique range of patented optical systems without eyepieces, designed for intricate tasks requiring superior quality viewing over long periods of time. Used in thousands of sites worldwide, the company says that it has now become an accepted standard for ergonomics and high performance magnification. The most recent generation of Mantis instruments incorporate the latest advances in optical design, moulded plastics and LED illumination.

The stereo eyepieceless Mantis viewers have a very wide range of applications but are often used in manufacturing industries including electronics, precision engineering, plastics, medical devices and others. They are also widely installed in production laboratories, biomedical sites and in analytical laboratories.

Particular benefits of the Mantis products include: entry level, low investment versions; compact, functional units; wide range of magnification options (up to 20 x); shadow-free LED cold illumination, both surface and substage; long working distances; large depths of field; and stable structures for high magnification viewing.
