Low profile connectors for slim equipment

22 November 2000 Interconnection

The DF19 low profile connectors from Hirose are a range of wire to PCB connectors on a 1,0 mm pitch that stand 1,7 mm high. This makes the DF19 ideal for use as a LCD interface, or with ultra-slim electronic equipment. There are three versions of SMT headers, the standard version is mounted on top of the PCB in a conventional manner, whilst the other two versions (one in reverse orientation) straddle a cutout in the PCB and allows designers to reduce the overall packaged height even further. The headers have a metal cover that forms part of the shielding/ ground plate, but also gives a large flat pick up area, to allow the use of standard vacuum nozzles for automatic placement from the tape and reel packaging supplied as standard.

DF19 can offer three versions of socket. The discrete wire version has tin-plated crimp contacts that can be used with 28 AWG cable, whilst still being able to handle 1 A. Other versions of the socket can be terminated with flat flexible shielded cable or miniature co-axial cable.

The connectors are fully shrouded and polarised, with two grounding points and detent latches to prevent the connectors unmating due to vibration or shock.
