Other than capacitive discharge applications and most applications above 1 kV, the system power is generally turned off prior to relay switching. Most high voltage relays therefore only have to carry the load.
However, in some test equipment applications the relay may be called upon to 'break'(open) the load because of residual energy in the cables or because of fault conditions in the system. To address this application, Kilovac developed the KC-18 which is rated for 15 kV and is claimed to be the smallest and lightest power switching high voltage relay with its contact rating in the industry.
Outside the KC-18 is identical to Kilovac's KC-11 and KC-12 high voltage relays. This is only 5,8 x 4,5 cm overall and light, about 113 g. The real difference is inside the KC-18. There, Kilovac engineers designed a special shield that when teamed with the solid tungsten contacts provides an unprecedented hot switching life rating, and it is the only high voltage relay designed to isolate high voltage as well as hot switch.
