For its all-in-one S-MAX controller, Phoenix Contact needed a processor designed for robust industrial environments that would eliminate heat and vibration problems. It chose Pentium M technology to satisfy the rising demands placed on control systems for more computing power.
The Pentium M processor, at 1,1 GHz, provides the same computing power as a Pentium IV 2,0 GHz processor, but uses less energy. As a result, systems that so far had to be kept separate, like HMI, PLC and industrial PCs, can be combined in one device due to the S-MAX controller platform, says the company.
Apart from the 6,4" system, Phoenix Contact now also provides equipment with 12", 15" and 17" displays as well as without displays, which support all common standards like Ethernet, DVI-X and USB. Communication with higher levels, other distributed controllers and I/O components takes place via Ethernet TCP/IP or Profinet as well as standard fieldbus systems. A Sercos interface is provided for networking drives, which the company says saves time and costs on ordering, set-up and servicing.
