Reflective-type TFT LCD reduces weight, power and thickness

Instead of the conventional backlight located behind the panel in the transmissive-type LCDs used in notebook computers, Sharp has developed what it says is a breakthrough, the highly reflective thin-film transistor (HR-TFT) Super Mobile LCD. This display uses reflected external light to achieve a clear display when subjected to direct sunlight. Sharp's innovation allows a super-thin profile and lightweight design with substantially reduced power consumption.
Combining a micro reflective structure (MRS) that uses TFT-driven highly reflective electrodes and Sharp's proprietary Super HA technology (super high aperture ratio) and HCR (high contrast reflection) display mode, Sharp has managed to develop a bright, 260 000-colour display with a contrast ratio of 20:1. Claimed to be without parallax artifacts, the bright full-colour display is ideal for mobile equipment used outdoors – even in full daylight.
Eliminating the backlight and associated light guides has the following benefits says the manufacturer. Weight is halved, thickness is a third and power consumption is a seventh of conventional transmissive type LCDs.
