Spectrum analyser for next-generation mobile communications systems

22 November 2000 Test & Measurement

Anritsu Corporation's MS2683A spectrum analyser is targeted at evaluating devices for next-generation mobile radio communications systems. According to the company this instrument offers a wide dynamic range, excellent RBW, and high-speed sweep functions in a small portable cabinet as well as superior price performance for the manufacturing and maintenance markets.

Third-generation mobile radio communications systems conforming to IMT-2000 (2 GHz band) will soon enter service and the BlueTooth system (2,4 GHz) is also being adopted for short-range radio communications by mobile terminals and peripheral devices. R&D in many countries is focused on MMAC, IEEE-802.11a, and Hyper LAN2 (5 GHz band) that allow high-speed radio access to the Internet.

The MS2683A covers the 9 kHz to 7,8 GHz band and offers functions and performance at low cost in a compact portable cabinet. This makes it ideal for cutting costs in manufacturing, installation and maintenance of mobile communications systems worldwide. It strengthens Anritsu's spectrum analyser lineup and is aimed at increasing the company's market share of measuring instruments for radio communications and related devices.

Outline

The MS2683A is a spectrum analyser for evaluating devices for next-generation mobile radio communications systems. Functions and performance such as a wide dynamic range (156 dB typ), RBW (300 Hz to 20 MHz) and high-speed sweeping (20 times/s refresh rate) make for a superior instrument. At ACP measurement with W-CDMA signal input, it achieves excellent results of -68 dB (5 MHz offset) and -75 dB (10 MHz offset), making it ideal for evaluating devices, such as basestation power amplifiers, etc.

In addition, the input attenuator can be set in 2 dB steps, making it possible to suppress internal mixer distortion and noise levels.

The MS2683A has convenient one-touch functions for measuring each evaluation item, such as adjacent channel power and occupied bandwidth etc, by selecting soft keys displayed on the measurement screen. These useful measure functions permit automatic pass/fail evaluation of measured items after measurement start.

The instrument can automatically perform the following measurements: frequency count, adjacent channel power measurement, occupied frequency bandwidth measurement, average power measurement, channel power measurement, time domain template pass/fail evaluation, frequency domain mask pass/fail evaluation. Options: precision frequency reference oscillator (±5 x 10-10/day); extension of preselector lower limit to 1,6 GHz.

Key target applications are: development and manufacturing of parts for mobile communications terminals, including amplifiers, VCOs, mixers, semiconductors, etc and communications modules; and installation of W-CDMA/cdma2000 basestations.
