Piek has a team of professional trainers and state-of-the-art training programmes. Its flexibility to adapt to clients' needs form the basis for students to improve their labour skills, their motivation and experience.

The training course conducted was 'Qualified lead-free specialist' and the duration was three days. The objective of this training is to supply the student with a theoretical but mostly practical knowledge of the switch to lead-free. The syllabus comprised the following topics: Introduction and Law for Lead-free Assemblies; Lead-free PCB Finishes; Lead-free Component Finishes; Lead-free Wave Soldering; Lead-free Reflow Soldering; Marking Lead-Free; Practice Qualified Repair and Rework of Lead-free Assemblies.

"The drive to lead-free manufacturing has raised many questions and concerns, but this course gives you a firm basis to implement lead-free manufacturing in your company," says Techmet managing director, Hannes Liebenberg. "Techmet staff first underwent the training in The Netherlands and decided to introduce it to South Africa after numerous customer requests."

The course is based on recognised IPC-standards and each module consists of a practical hands-on part where delegates can practise lead-free hand soldering and inspect results according to the IPC-A-610D (Standard for Inspection of Assembled PCBs soldered with Lead-free).

Durban and Johannesburg were chosen as venues and both were quickly fully booked. Solder and flux products were supplied by Techmet and equipment support was from Ersa. Techmet is a manufacturer of consumables and a supplier of equipment to the electronics manufacturing industry. Techmet is based in Germiston, Gauteng, with sales offices in Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London.
