A reliable heat source for cable manufacturer

19 October 2005 Test & Measurement

The 9141 field dry-well calibrator from Hart Scientific was just the instrument Aberdare Cables needed to calibrate various PRT temperature probes at its facilities in Port Elizabeth.

The PRT temperature probes in the Aberdare facility measure the temperature in the production cycle of various cables and fibres being manufactured. Accurate temperature is crucial to the manufacturing process. Aberdare's recently-acquired 9141 unit does calibrations up to 650°C, weighs 3,2 kg and heats up to 650°C in only 12 minutes.

"The temperature limits of the 9141 dry-well met the minimum test requirements of the Aberdare probes being calibrated," says Brendan Campbell, product specialist at local distributor, Comtest. "The two most critical specs on a dry-well are accuracy and stability. Accuracy is how close the unit's well temperature is to the programmed set-point, stability is the temperature fluctuation of the instrument around the desired set-point over time."

"Hart designs the electronics and sensor package for each dry-well to provide traceable accuracy that is reasonably adequate for many applications. To get the most accurate calibrations possible you should use an external reference thermometer. The block used by Aberdare features multiple holes, which means they can put a reference thermometer in close proximity to the sensor they are testing and they can calibrate several probes simultaneously."

"The four-inch-wide dry-well is amazing," says Rob Williams of Aberdare. "You can control all functions from the front panel or hook it up to your PC with its built-in RS232 port. It works with the Interface-it software, which provides access to all controller functions and the ability to graphically monitor the temperature displayed on the heat source."

The 9930 Interface-it model allows users to use their own PC to control the function of the dry-well. They can view the temperature, program the ramp and soak routine, change the set-point, see the power usage, or check the proportional band setting. It also has a basic data collection feature.

Many customers use a dry-well as both a heat source and a reference thermometer, says Hart. In other words, they put their probes to be tested in the well and compare its reading to the temperature on the display of the dry-well. The dry-well displays both the temperature the user set and the actual temperature measured by the dry-well's own control sensor.

The 9141 field dry-well calibrator offers a good combination of accuracy, portability and price for industrial calibration applications and was the reliable heat source that Aberdare needed to verify the accuracy of their probes.
