Double-layer capacitors have highest capacitance values

Passive Components
Based on the 'Helmholtz principle' of energy storage in the electrochemical double-layer capacitor, Wima has developed a line of 'SuperCap' capacitors that it claims features approximately 1 000 000 times the capacitance values of conventional capacitors of comparable size. The energy contained by the Wima SuperCaps can be compared to the energy stored in small batteries, but the SuperCaps can release considerably higher currents. They are also maintenance-free.
Special materials based on a carbon electrode, are deposited with a very low resistance on an electron-conducting foil. This provides the SuperCaps with layers that comprise an extremely large surface in the smallest possible volume.
These double-layer capacitors are available with standard capacitance values from 100 F to 300 F with a rated voltage of 2,5 V d.c. and with discharge currents up to 50 A. With a prismatic housing, serial and parallel connections can be realised in a minimum volume. The SuperCaps can replace, protect or support batteries in, for example, new drive technologies, wind-power systems or UPS.
