M8 connectors for space-saving automation applications

2 November 2005 Interconnection

Erni is offering new M8 male and female connectors designed for automation technology. The first products will be 3- and 4-pin female connectors, and a 4-pin version of the male connector. These connectors can be used to build a flexible I/O-connection on the circuit board. By employing surface-mount technology (SMT) termination, Erni is enabling customers for the first time to consistently miniaturise their field devices.

When the connector is plugged in, its protection rating meets IP67 in accord with the IEC 61076-2-101 standard. The traditional range of applications includes connecting sensors and actuators in automation technology. Now, however, the space-saving M8 connectors are also being used for power-supply and bus connections where M12 connectors or others are too large. Unlike the M12 connectors, M8 connectors are coded only via the contact arrangement.

The M8 connector's terminal connections have been made very robust. Despite their relatively high installation height, it is possible to mount the male and female connectors automatically using today's automatic placement machines and feeders.

Because of Erni's modular design, connectors can be manufactured in different installation heights and versions. Customers may choose the most suitable termination technique (SMT, press-fit, or through-hole reflow). These M8 connectors are also already designed for lead-free processing.
