New approach to measuring fibre-optics demonstrated

An expert from the world's leading communications test solutions provider was in South Africa recently to introduce the local market to a new approach to carrying out measurements on fibre-optic cables.

In August, Acterna, recently acquired by JDS Uniphase (JDSU), appointed Comtest as its sole representative in southern Africa. Acterna specialises in offering instruments, systems, software, services and integrated solutions that help communications service providers, equipment manufacturers and major communications users to maintain their competitive advantage at each stage of the network lifecycle. JDSU offers some of the finest communications test technology in the world and the South African market is being exposed to this revolutionary technology for the first time by Comtest.

An expert was recently in South Africa to introduce the local market to a new approach to carrying out measurements on fibre-optic cables. The business development and product manager for the Middle East and Africa in Acterna's fibre optics division, Grégory Liétaert, demonstrated his company's range of optical fibre test equipment to Comtest customers in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

During his trip he visited some of the key role players in the fibre-optics market and says that all of these visits were positive and elicited good feedback from the customers. He introduced them to a new generation test platform for optical networks, in the form of Acterna's revolutionary MTS-8000.

According to Liétaert, the MTS-8000 breaks new ground in fibre-optic cable measurement. He says, "Built on a flexible, scalable platform, the Acterna MTS-8000 tester combines the best in photonic and physical test functionality, lifting it above the crowd of standalone testers and single-function modules. This single instrument can be used for fibre installation, network turnup, and system maintenance and upgrades, and it generates test results in seconds, which means that more fibres can be tested in less time.

"The MTS-8000 is a modular, multilayer product that can be added onto when technology or the application demands it. This obviously makes the technology more cost-effective in the long-term, as well as far easier to upgrade as its stackable design allows it to hold additional modules, saving both space and weight."

Commenting on his visits to various Comtest customers, Liétaert said he was highly impressed by the people that he had met and that this reflected well on Comtest's knowledge of the South African market as well as its ability to reach key players in the fibre-optics field.

Comtest's precision measurement sales manager, Hilton Preston, says, "As a product specialist on fibre optic solutions, Grégory has helped to expand our knowledge of the solutions and products available in this market. We are confident that this solution will prove invaluable to the fixed line operators who have optical fibre installed as well as the manufacturers of fibre optic cables."
