Multichannel AC/DC sensitive monitoring system is fast

The high requirements relating to the operational safety of modern industrial and administration equipment have made the permanent monitoring of increasingly complex electrical installations absolutely necessary.

On the basis of these requirements, Bender has developed an extensive range of residual current monitors. The new RCMS460/490, which was presented at Hanover Fair 2005, is characterised by the fact that it is the world's fastest, AC/DC sensitive multichannel monitoring system, according to the company.

The RCMS460 residual current monitoring system fulfils requirements for periodic testing of stationary electrical equipment for fixed installed equipment, by continuous monitoring of this electrical equipment for residual and fault currents. This means, continuous monitoring of the safety-relevant insulation resistance value instead of periodic testing. Not only does this greatly enhance the level of protection against electric shock but also leads to a significant reduction in testing costs, says Bender.

The RCMS460 is the first multichannel monitoring system worldwide that allows the monitoring of rated, residual and AC/DC currents providing a true root-mean-square value in the frequency range 0-2000 Hz and in the measurement range 1 mA to 30 (20) A. This is, for example, very important when using variable-speed drives or switched-mode power supplies as the fault currents may include DC components. The measured values are stored in the historical data storage where they can be accessed for evaluation purposes. Here, 1080 channels can be queried and indicated in 200 ms. The exchange of information between the devices takes place via RS485 interface. Higher-level systems can be connected via Ethernet or other fieldbus systems.

The RCMS460 system finds application in all modern power supply systems and, in particular, in extensive information technology systems such as those employed in office complexes and electronic data processing centres, banks, industrial plant, airports, traffic control and signalling equipment, hospitals or power plants.
