Press system for small- and medium-sized series production

8 March 2006 Interconnection

Erni, a supplier of interconnect technologies and products, has introduced a hydro-pneumatic press system aimed at limited-volume series production. The EPC 3x modular press system is designed for small- and medium-sized batches in series production of products that use press-fit technology.

Enabling fast and flexible assembly of plug-in cards or backplanes, Erni says that its quick-change system for the press-fit tools also ensures PCBs to be assembled with different connector types. Limit values for the insertion force are set and monitored via the touch-screen graphic display. PCB tolerances are also checked, ensuring process reliability.

The press-in process using the EPC 3X has been designed to offer a great deal of flexibility, and it can be used with or without programming. Without programming, the component numbers can be entered directly, and the connectors can be selected from the library, which contains all the important information. The process parameters are also entered directly at this point.

The press is 1,4 m long, 1,1 m wide and 1,2 m high and weighs approximately 300 kg. It is offered with insertion forces from 10 kN (just over 1 US ton) to 70 kN - the standard force is 30 kN.

The EPC 3x is offered in different configurations. Customers can select the force element, sliding table, lifting table, simple step control, PLC control or PC control, and measurement of the PCB thickness. The press is also network compatible.
