Silicon oscillator family also has protection functions

22 March 2006 Circuit & System Protection

Maxim has introduced a family of silicon oscillators that it says offers all the popular supervisory functions of medium-accuracy silicon oscillators in a single, surface-mount microMAX package.

The MAX7387-MAX7391 devices switch frequencies and range from 32 kHz for low-power modes, to 16 MHz in high-speed mode. The tiny devices are ideal for high-reliability systems, as they do not utilise external high-impedance nodes commonly found in ceramic resonator circuits. This makes them less susceptible to dirt, humidity, and high-EMI/ESD conditions. Also, because the oscillators do not rely on mechanical methods, they are less sensitive to environmental concerns such as vibration and shock.

Integrated into this oscillator family is a reset output to interface with a microcontroller, power-fail detection to alert the system of an impending power failure, and a watchdog to monitor the health of the system. These devices eliminate the need for virtually all external supervisors.

The manufacturer guarantees the MAX7387-MAX7391 family for operation over the - 55 to +135°C temperature range while it is specified over the -40 to

+125°C automotive temperature range. Total accuracy is ±4% over this latter range, and ±2,75% over 0 to +85°C. At a supply voltage of 3,3 V, the supply current is a low 2,9 mA for the 16 MHz device.
