Wireless Profibus communications also failsafe

19 April 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

The Dataeagle 3002 is a new wireless data transfer system for Profibus from Schildknecht Elektronik. It supports speeds up to 1,5 Mbps and uses the licence-free 2,4 GHz band. Many wireless receivers can be connected on the slave-side as well as numerous Profibus DP slaves.

The company has developed the Dataeagle 3002 to be reliable and available so that it is Profisafe rated. Profisafe is the failsafe fieldbus protocol based on Profibus, to avoid the failure of information transmission between controllers and devices.

Illustrated in the picture is the funicular railway elevator on the hill in Montmartre in Paris, where the Dataeagle 3002 is implemented.

The Dataeagle 3002 has a range of around 100 to 200 m indoors and up to around 500 m outdoors (line-of-sight). The unit measures 230 x 100 x 30 mm, is IP54 rated and uses a 9-33 V d.c. power supply.
