Rabbit microprocessor now with more features

17 May 2006 DSP, Micros & Memory

Rabbit Semiconductor's Rabbit 4000 microprocessor is the newest addition to the legendary Rabbit line of microprocessors, which offers new and improved features from integrated Ethernet to hardware DMA. These new features make the Rabbit 4000 well-suited for today's demanding embedded applications of connectivity and control.

Building upon the company's highly successful Rabbit 3000 microprocessor, the 4000 is available in two RoHS compliant packages, 128-pin LQFP and 128-pin TFBGA configurations. The new features include integrated 10Base-T Ethernet, hardware DMA, 16-bit memory device support, and page-mode memory device support.

Features also include hardware security features, hardware breakpoints, variable-phase PWM, and up to 40 GPIO with up to four levels of alternate pin functions. More than 500 new instructions were added to increase the processing speed and efficiency, according to the company.

Programming the Rabbit 4000 microprocessor is made easy with Rabbit's Dynamic C software development system. According to the company, its successful integration of hardware and software substantially reduces development time and cost. In addition, the microprocessor is programmable in-circuit without costly in-circuit emulators, using a simple programming cable provided with the Rabbit 4000 development kits. Integrated features of the Rabbit 4000 allow embedded engineers to develop smaller designs, enabling for diverse implementation.

RabbitCores

RabbitCores are modules that mount directly onto a userdesigned-motherboard, and can interface with CMOS-compatible digital devices via the user's motherboard. The RCM4000 and RCM4100 series is the first of the next generation core modules to take advantage of the new Rabbit 4000 microprocessor.

Programs are developed with Rabbit's Dynamic C development system that includes an editor, compiler, and in-circuit debugger. Programming is simplified as hundreds of samples and libraries are pre-developed, allowing a user to be quickly up and running. No in-circuit emulator is required, no third party tools needed. Dynamic C enhanced compiler generates smaller code, support for far pointers and far data for easy access to external memory devices, improvements to AES encryption libraries, and a new I/O configuration utility that helps assign pin functions and guides those selections so that conflicts can be avoided.

The RCM4000 microprocessor core module is an embedded Ethernet control device that has the intelligence and Internet connectivity to allow devices to be remotely monitored and controlled from anywhere in the world. The RCM4100 microprocessor core modules are compact control devices for embedded applications that require I/O control, data handling, and peripheral connectivity. The RCM4000 and RCM4100 series feature small footprints of 47 x 61 mm, and 36 x 48 mm respectively.
