Freescale has released to market a Flash-based 32 bit microcontroller optimised for low power operation and supported by a range of free and low-cost tools to speed development. The ColdFire Version 2 core (V.2) based MCF5211/2/3 microcontroller product family was designed to meet the growing need for a low-cost flash-based 32-bit microcontroller. The family is targeted at applications that have typically been based on 8- and 16-bit microcontrollers, but now require higher levels of performance and integration to meet increasingly complex system requirements. The highly integrated MCF5211/2/3 family integrates up to 256 KB of secure Flash memory, an optional CAN controller, a highly accurate 8 channel 12-bit ADC and a range of serial communications controllers. The devices have been optimised to meet the key requirements of traditional 8/16-bit markets, with the main features of: higher performance; low power operation; and low cost. The ColdFire V.2 Core delivers 32-bit performance running up to a maximum of 80 MHz or 76,8 MIPs. They come in 64-pin, 100-pin QFP and 81-ball MAPBGA packages.
