FPGA family with 'low cost per logic' suits gate-centric programmable logic designs - kit available

31 May 2006 Programmable Logic

The Spartan-3E FPGA family from Xilinx utilises 90 nm process technology. Ranging from 100 K to 1,6 M system gates, the Spartan-3E family is claimed to deliver one of the lowest costs per logic cell in the FPGA industry. The family is focused on reducing unit and overall system costs by offering a wide range of platform features at low price points. The Spartan-3E family implements microprocessor, microcontroller, and DSP functions. They also include a host of features tuned for the consumer-electronics market, reducing the need for other discrete devices.

Key features of these FPGAs include:

* From 66 to 376 I/Os with density migration.

* Up to 648 K of block RAM and up to 231 K of distributed RAM.

* Up to 36 embedded 18 x 18 multipliers for high-performance DSP applications.

* Up to eight Digital Clock Managers to eliminate discrete DLLs/PLLs and phase shifters.

* Supports Xilinx Platform Flash and commodity serial and parallel flash memories.

* Support for 18 common single-ended and differential I/O standards.

* Easy-to-implement interfacing to DDR memories.

* PCI 64/66 and PCI-X compatibility.

Xilinx also offers a complete development board solution, the Spartan-3E FPGA Starter Kit, which gives designers instant access to the capabilities of the Spartan-3E family. The complete kit includes board, power supply, evaluation software, resource CD (application notes, white papers, data sheets, etc), and USB cable.

Key features include:

* Devices: Spartan-3E (XC3S500E-4FG320C), CoolRunner-II (XC2C64A- 5VQ44C) and Platform Flash (XCF04S-VO20C).

* Clocks: 50 MHz crystal clock oscillator.

* Memory: 128 Mbit parallel flash, 16 Mbit SPI flash, 64 MB DDR SDRAM.

* Ethernet 10/100 Phy.

* Two 9-pin RS232 serial port.

* Eight individual LED outputs.

* PS/2-style mouse/keyboard port.

* 100-pin expansion connection ports.

* Eight individual LED outputs.

The kit includes: the development board; universal 100-240 V power supply; evaluation software; schematics and resource CD; and USB cable.
