Multigate logic devices now have 5 kV ESD protection

Royal Philips Electronics has announced that it now provides the broadest portfolio of advanced ultra-low power (AUP) logic products with 5 kV of electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection - this is twice the industry standard of 2,5 kV and higher than any multigate logic product currently on the market, according to Philips.
"ESD protection is becoming increasingly critical as consumers demand smaller mobile devices that use less power, and as ASICs and system-level chip solutions move to 90 nm process technologies and below," said Bruce Potvin, director of marketing, logic product line, Philips Semiconductors. "Philips AUP logic devices now offer breakthrough levels of ESD protection for SOCs developed using very low-voltage processes."
ESD is a serious issue in electronics because ICs are made from silicon and insulating materials such as silicon dioxide, which can break down if exposed to high voltages. ASICs and system-level chip solutions built on the latest process technologies typically cannot offer adequate ESD protection due to space and cost constraints. Philips AUP logic devices can be used for voltage translation and signal switching to provide 5 kV of ESD protection for SOCs, while minimising the total number of components required in a design. As a result, system designers and manufacturers can benefit from lower costs, more efficient use of space and higher quality end designs.
