Schroff subracks used in speedy levitated train

The first commercial Transrapid route in Shanghai connects the Long Yang Road underground station with the new Pudong International Airport. Along the 30 km route three Transrapid trains with a maximum speed of up to 430 km/h are deployed. A ground breaking innovation, the Transrapid hovers without touching the track, by means of an electro-magnetic hover and operating system.

Carrying magnets hoist the vehicle while guiding magnets hold it sideways within the track. An electronic regulator guarantees a 10 mm touch-free gap.

For this demonstration project, conventional and proven mechanical components, such as a large number of subracks are being used, without which the operation would be hard to realise. In each section of the Transrapid a multitude of electronic components and systems are housed. During the selection of suitable enclosure solutions, Schroff's highly flexible 19" subracks were chosen.

Modularity

With the modular 19" subrack the user can realise versions in different heights, widths and depths with the flexibly-combined standard parts, economically and without much assembly effort. Expensive customised units are thus unnecessary. The basic model consists of two side panels and four horizontal rails. With the extensive range of accessories the user has the possibility to gradually retrofit the subracks. In respect of EMC especially, this is a great advantage, as it is often not apparent at the outset, what level of EMC shielding will be required. For instance, contact springs, which can be inserted between the assembly parts such as cover plates and side panels, or conductive textile shielding in the front panels of the plug-in units, guarantee safe HF shielding. Furthermore, guide rails - part of the standard range - allow flexible arrangement of all board positions and also have some advantageous features such as insulated board guidance, coding facility of 19" plug-in units, ESD clips for board guidance and board protection. Schroff also anodises all front-facing surfaces and chromates all rear surfaces.

In cabinets and on the sub-floor

Some customised units were manufactured for the Transrapid's onboard steering, section computers and vehicle diagnostic computers. The specific demands for mobile use with corresponding environmental conditions such as shock and vibration, cooling and EMC demands, were confirmed independent tests. Installed in the subracks are, for instance, onboard electrical power steering, and other systems such as boost converters, magnetic regulator units, locating units, onboard power distributors and further regulating electronics.

In total, approximately 70 subracks of diverse construction have been integrated per section, partly in electronic cabinets and in the sub-floor area.
