Controller improves efficiency and compactness of resonant converters while lowering noise emissions

26 July 2006 Power Electronics / Power Management

An advanced double-ended controller specifically designed for the series-resonant half-bridge topology for power supplies, has been introduced by STMicroelectronics. Offering a multitude of functions, the company says its robust high-voltage L6599 IC allows for the design of fully-protected and reliable power supplies that are particularly suited for use in applications such as LCD and plasma display TVs, high-end AC-DC adapters for laptops and game consoles, and servers and telecom SMPS.

The L6599 includes additional features such as a dedicated output for direct power factor corrector (PFC) connection, two-level over-current protection, latched disable input, burst-mode operation at light-load, and an input for power-on/off sequencing or brownout protection.

The device operates at 50% complementary duty-cycle with a fixed dead-time inserted to ensure soft-switching. It enables high-frequency (up to 500 kHz) operation with high efficiency and low EMI emissions. To drive the high-side switch with the bootstrap approach, the device combines a high-voltage floating structure, able to withstand more than 600 V, with a synchronous-driven high-voltage LDMOS device that eliminates the need for an external fast-recovery bootstrap diode.

The L6599 provides a typical peak current capability for both gate drivers of 0,6 A source and 1,2 A sink and enables designers to set the operating frequency range with an external oscillator. A non-linear soft-start prevents inrush current and minimises output-voltage overshoot. It also features low power consumption (<30 mW), guaranteed latch-up free operation with slew rates up to 50 V/ns, and protection.
