Altico, a division of Actum Electronics, supplies desiccants such as Lacarsil Clay and Silica Gel as well as a wide range of humidity indicators, which can be personalised to suit the needs of individual customers.
Activated Clay has been given the name of Lacarsil. It is lightly coloured, and it is in the form of granules which may be 0,5 to 6 mm in size. Silica Gel is available in crystal or pearl form. It is normally white, but may be impregnated with an activated principal for immediate verification of the amount of adsorbed humidity. In chemical terms, Silica Gel is silicon dioxide amorphous and the crystals are from 0,7 to 6 mm in size, whilst the pearls vary between 1 and 5 mm.
The chemical and physical properties of both Lacarsil and Silica Gel are such that they adsorb the water vapour present in the atmosphere without subsequently releasing it. They are the only substances to have this particular capacity, they are used whenever there is a need to bring down humidity levels and to create an environment compatible with the requirements of the packaged goods, so as to protect them from the risk of oxidation, corrosion, etc.
The quantity of desiccant to be used is proportional to the amount of humidity to be controlled, but it depends also on the length of time to be covered, and on the packaging and material, etc.
The humidity indicator cards indicate the humidity level on a paper support. The real climatic conditions inside the sealed package are immediately evident at a glance. This provides an essential verification of the performance of the desiccant used, accurate within 5%.
