Company designs and manufactures purpose-specific equipment

26 July 2006 Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

Focusing mainly on the design, development, manufacture and testing of specialised RF and microwave equipment, Opt-Osl Systems is a Centurion-based business that launched as an independent business in 1996 after gradually expanding as a part-time operation under the auspices of Abraham du Plooy.

The company's product range now includes remote measurement systems, UHF passive tag readers, purpose-made antennas and remote landing lights as well as a line of data radios, transmitters and receivers.

According to the company, its interest lies in the development of purpose-specific equipment according to customers' needs. It ensures that they are provided with a viable product which is subject to continuous quality evaluation. Some examples of the products include remote measurement systems such as the B-MON monitor and the Equilibrium Telemetry and Management System.

The B-MON Bay level auto-calibrator and VSWR monitor is designed to monitor the complete cellular feeder and antenna system of 900/1800 MHz GSM systems. It can continuously measure transmit power and return loss. A distinct feature of B-MON's VSWR measurements is that the RX feeders are continually monitored, independent of the TX signal, without interfering with the RX traffic on that feeder.

The company's Equilibrium Telemetry and Management System is a product that interfaces with existing installed electronic readable devices, typically electricity and/or water meters and an industry standard contactor. It then provides services based on information obtained from these devices, for example, enabling or disabling the utility to the consumer as well as providing data related to the device, the consumption or the consumer's payment profile. The information obtained is accessible from a database in a control room.

Opt-Osl Systems has also designed UHF Passive Tagreaders (fixed and handheld) to comply with the needs of a client involved in the identification and authentication field. They are used in the identification of vehicles and containers as well as for inventory control. Depending on permittable output power, distances from 2 metres up to 12 metres are achieved.

Other products include several RF transceivers and receivers, ranging from 100 MHz to 1400 MHz. Most of these devices are for customer-specific applications. Standalone RF devices, together with CPU units, are integrated to form complete data radios.

The group has a quality management system that conforms with ISO 9001:2000 requirements. It says that products and systems are qualified and proven prior to implementation and then regularly examined to ensure that it meets with the needs of its customers.
